In-home ABA therapy in New Jersey

ABA therapy that meets your child where life actually happens. At the kitchen table, getting ready for school, or navigating everyday challenges at home. Not in a clinic across town.

Mastermind brings BCBA-led, in-home care to families with children on the autism spectrum across all 21 New Jersey counties. From Bergen down to Cape May, North Jersey through the Shore to South Jersey.

How in-home ABA works in New Jersey

New Jersey is the densest state in the country, and the most varied. Bergen County suburbs operate like an extension of Manhattan. Cape May runs at a different speed entirely. In between you've got Shore towns, Trenton's commuter rings, the Pinelands, and Newark apartment blocks all within a two-hour drive.

Our Mastermind Behavior in-home ABA therapy model is built for exactly that. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst completes the assessment by video call, and a Behavior Technician runs direct sessions in your home, where the morning routine, the school-bus drop-off and bedtime actually happen, typically 10 to 20 hours a week, with regular BCBA supervision and parent training built in.

Insurance and coverage in New Jersey

Most NJ families are covered. NJ has one of the strongest autism mandates in the country: no dollar cap, no enforceable age limit. NJ FamilyCare covers ABA via EPSDT for kids under 21. We verify your specific plan completely free.

What this means for your specific plan

Private (fully insured) plan in New Jersey

The state mandate (P.L. 2009, c. 115) applies. ABA therapy is a covered benefit, no annual dollar cap, no age limit we've seen enforced in practice. You won't hit a $35K or $40K wall mid-year the way families in some other states do.

Self-funded employer plan

The NJ mandate doesn't apply, but federal MHPAEA parity does. If the plan covers mental health services at all, ABA usually has to be covered on parity terms. Most large NJ employers' self-funded plans cover ABA; check the SPD or HR to confirm.

NJ FamilyCare (NJ Medicaid)

Comprehensive ABA coverage through EPSDT for children under 21. No fixed dollar cap; hours authorized based on medical necessity. Income eligibility extends to 355% FPL for kids under 19, which covers many middle-income families.

Other pathways

If your employer plan doesn't cover ABA, NJ FamilyCare and the NJ Children's System of Care offer additional routes. We'll walk you through them on the consultation call.

What New Jersey requires before ABA starts

If your plan was bought from an insurer

No doctor's referral is needed. Coverage depends on medical necessity and BCBA supervision.

No referral needed

BCBA-led care

We submit the paperwork

New Jersey's mandate sets no prescription or physician referral precondition for ABA. What it conditions the benefit on is medical necessity and who delivers the service: the Department of Banking and Insurance directs carriers to treat ABA as eligible when it is administered directly by, or under the direct supervision of, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.

A written autism diagnosis, an assessment and a treatment plan signed by a BCBA is what the authorization request looks like in practice, and it is what we submit.

If your child is on NJ FamilyCare

NJ FamilyCare covers ABA for children under 21 with a recommendation from a licensed practitioner.

Under 21 through EPSDT

Practitioner recommendation

Autism line 609.588.8522

Medicaid covers ABA for children under 21 through EPSDT, and unlike the commercial mandate it does require a recommendation from a qualified licensed practitioner. Prior authorization runs through your child's managed care plan, or, for fee-for-service coverage, through the Interim Managing Entity at 1.844.276.2444. The state also runs a dedicated autism line for ABA questions at 609.588.8522. We handle the paperwork on both routes.

If your plan is self-funded by an employer

State rules don't reach these plans. Many still cover ABA on their own.

Federal appeal rights

Check your Summary Plan Description

The state mandate and the state appeal process do not reach it. Self-funded plans carry federal appeal rights instead, and many cover ABA without being compelled to. The Summary Plan Description, which the plan administrator must give you free of charge, is where to check.

If you are refused

Two appeals with your plan come first. Then New Jersey can send your case to an independent reviewer.

180 days per appeal stage

NJ FamilyCare: 60 days

State review within 4 months

Urgent: 48 hours

For a regulated plan, you have 180 days from the denial to file a Stage 1 appeal with the carrier, and 180 days for Stage 2. NJ FamilyCare members have 60 days for Stage 1. After the internal appeals, New Jersey's Independent Health Care Appeals Program, run by DOBI, reviews the case through an independent utilization review organization; that request must be filed within four months of the final internal decision.

Where a delay would seriously jeopardize your child's health, an expedited external review is decided within 48 hours.

What to expect: the Mastermind Behavior clinical model

The path from your first call to a BT in your living room runs five steps:

  1. Free consultation

A 20-minute call where we listen to what's going on, walk you through coverage, and tell you honestly whether ABA is the right fit for what you're describing.

  2. BCBA assessment

The BCBA runs standardized assessments, typically the Vineland alongside a skill-based assessment like the VB-MAPP or AFLS, to determine your child's current skill level and overall level of functioning. This usually happens by video call, with you and your child.

  3. Individualized treatment plan

The BCBA pulls together the standardized assessments, parent interview, and direct observation to build a plan with specific goals, skill acquisition and, where applicable, behavior reduction, to work toward over the next six months. At the six-month mark we reassess and continue.

  4. In-home sessions

A Behavior Technician runs sessions in your home, generally 10 to 20 hours a week. The BCBA supervises directly, reviews data, and adjusts the plan as your child progresses.

  5. Parent training

Built in from the start. The point is to give you the tools to keep ABA going for the other 23 hours of the day.

A few details specific to NJ practice

  • NJ BCBA licensure (LBA) is required to deliver ABA. Verifying that your provider's BCBAs are state-licensed, and not only BACB-certified, is a meaningful question to ask, and the answer should be yes.
  • NJ has a strong Early Intervention system for children under 3. The Family Cost Share is reimbursable through the autism mandate, which means many families pay nothing for early intervention delivered through NJEIS.
  • NJ DOBI runs an ongoing autism mandate stakeholder workgroup with Autism New Jersey and NJABA. This is one of the better-regulated environments for ABA in the country.

If things escalate between sessions

A treatment plan is built for the ordinary hard days. Some days are not ordinary. For a child in an emotional or behavioral crisis that is not immediately life-threatening, New Jersey's Children's System of Care offers Mobile Response and Stabilization Services through PerformCare at 1.877.652.7624, 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Only a parent, caregiver or legal guardian can request it. PerformCare screens the situation by phone and can dispatch a Mobile Response worker to your home within an hour to de-escalate and stabilize. The initial response runs 72 hours, and stabilization support can continue for up to eight weeks. There is no cost, regardless of insurance or income. For anything life-threatening, call 911 first.

We are not a crisis service. What we do afterward is look at what led up to it, adjust the plan, and, with your consent, share our data with whoever else is supporting your child.

Early intervention contacts by county

For a child under three, the single point of entry into New Jersey Early Intervention is your county's Special Child Health Services Case Management Unit. Each county runs its own unit with its own phone line. The statewide referral line, 888-653-4463, reaches the right regional intake from anywhere in New Jersey.

New Jersey Early Intervention System (NJEIS) serves children from birth to age three with developmental delays or disabilities. There are no income requirements. Referrals go to the Case Management Unit in the county where the family lives, which is funded jointly by the state Department of Health and that county's Board of Commissioners. At age three, responsibility moves to the local school district's child study team. NJ FamilyCare and PerformCare are both statewide and are not part of the county intake step.
