In New Jersey, a child with autism can have a lot of professionals: a school team, maybe a PerformCare care manager, a BCBA, therapists whose names change with the school year. Every one of them will eventually hand the moment back to you. Bedtime is yours. The grocery store is yours. The morning routine is yours.

Where parent training fits in New Jersey's system
Parent training in ABA exists for exactly that reason. It is hands-on coaching, in your home, that teaches you the same evidence-based strategies your child's team uses, so the progress made in sessions keeps going after the session ends.
New Jersey surrounds a child with autism with systems. Under three there is the Early Intervention System. School age brings the IEP and the school district. Until 21, public behavioral health services run through the Children's System of Care, administered by PerformCare. Each system has its own professionals, its own paperwork, and its own timeline.
You are the one constant in all of them. The person who is present for every routine, every transition, and every hard moment is also the person best positioned to change them. Parent training is how that position becomes practical skill.
It is also, in most cases, part of your child's covered care. When parent training is written into your child's ABA treatment plan, it is typically delivered and billed as part of ABA therapy itself, which New Jersey's insurance mandate requires most regulated plans to cover and NJ FamilyCare covers for children under 21.
Coverage in New Jersey

How Mastermind Behavior parent coaching works
Explain
The method is Behavioral Skills Training. Your BCBA explains a strategy from your child's own program: reinforcement that actually works for your child, antecedent strategies that head off hard moments before they start, prompting, structured routines, visual supports.
Model
Your BCBA models the strategy in the real routine where you need it.
Practice
Then it is handed to you, and you practice it during your own routines.
Coach
Your BCBA coaches while you practice. The feedback happens in the moment, at the kitchen table or the front door, and you learn simple ways to track whether things are improving.
Coaching is provided by your child's BCBA, the person who designs the program and knows the data. Because it happens in your home, during your real routines, it fits the life you actually have.
Parent training rarely stands alone. New Jersey families pair it with early intervention in the youngest years, with behavior support when specific behaviors are the pressing issue, and with transition planning as the teen years arrive.

Parent training and the New Jersey system
It is part of the covered service.
In New Jersey, parent training is delivered inside the ABA benefit, whether the coverage is a state-regulated plan under the autism mandate or NJ FamilyCare through EPSDT. Under the Department of Banking and Insurance's reading of the mandate, ABA is eligible when it is delivered by or under the direct supervision of a BCBA, and the coaching a BCBA does with parents is exactly that.
So the question that matters is whether the hours are in the treatment plan we submit, and we make sure they are.

Questions families ask
Is parent training covered by insurance in New Jersey?
When it is part of your child's ABA treatment plan, it is typically covered as part of ABA therapy. New Jersey's mandate requires most regulated plans to cover ABA, and NJ FamilyCare covers ABA for children under 21. We check the details of your specific plan with you before starting.
Do both parents have to participate?
We coach the people who are actually in the routines. For some families that is one parent. For others it is both, a grandparent, or another caregiver. The goal is consistency across the adults your child spends time with.
Is this a class?
No. There is no curriculum binder and no classroom. It is one-to-one coaching in your own home, during your own routines, on the specific situations you face.
My child already receives ABA. Why add this?
Because your child's week has far more hours in it than any therapy schedule. When the adults at home use the same prompts, reinforcement, and structured routines as the session team, skills generalize beyond the sessions.
What if a strategy does not work for us?
That is useful information. Your BCBA adjusts the plan based on what the data and your experience show. The program is built to serve your family.
